{"id":140,"date":"2016-01-08T10:54:20","date_gmt":"2016-01-08T10:54:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.solihulldentalcentre.co.uk\/blog\/?p=140"},"modified":"2016-02-09T15:53:22","modified_gmt":"2016-02-09T15:53:22","slug":"why-is-the-sugar-smart-app-so-good","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solihulldentalcentre.co.uk\/blog\/why-is-the-sugar-smart-app-so-good\/","title":{"rendered":"Why is the Sugar Smart App so Good?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 1208px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/change4life-beta\/campaigns\/sugar-smart\/home#cUUSDjmAP6LMoMby.97\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/campaignstorage.blob.core.windows.net\/change4life-beta\/production\/content_module\/image\/1078\/da1c143797e1edb4ff63e8dae4a7a687.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1198\" height=\"1153\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: nhs.uk\/change4life-beta\/campaigns\/sugar-smart\/<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<h2>Every day, without realising, we\u2019re ALL having too much added sugar<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p>You\u2019d be surprised at the amount of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/change4life-beta\/campaigns\/sugar-smart\/sugar-facts#added-sugars\">added sugar<\/a> lurking in everyday food and drink &#8211; and it builds up quickly over the day.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Parents are now being advised to enroll in a totally free application which informs them on the sugar content of drink and food.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;sugar smart app&#8221;, from Public Health England (PHE), functions by checking bar code scans and revealing total sugar content of the food in either cubes or grams.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities hope it can help combat tooth cavities, weight problems and type 2\u00a0diabetes and encourage families to select more healthy options with their daily diet.<\/p>\n<h2>Tooth Cavities &amp; Dental Disease<\/h2>\n<p>Approximately 46,500 children and young people under 19 were admitted to hospital for a primary diagnosis of dental caries in 2013\u201314 according to\u00a0The state of children\u2019s oral health in England report by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcseng.ac.uk\/fds\/policy\/documents\/fds-report-on-the-state-of-childrens-oral-health\">Faculty of Dental Surgery<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; that&#8217;s more children than were admitted for tonsillitis.<\/p>\n<p>As a nation, if we are going to reduce these hospital admissions for young people and we need to get dental disease under control.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-144\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solihulldentalcentre.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/hospitaladmissions.png\" alt=\"hospitaladmissions\" width=\"846\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solihulldentalcentre.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/hospitaladmissions.png 846w, https:\/\/www.solihulldentalcentre.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/hospitaladmissions-50x30.png 50w, https:\/\/www.solihulldentalcentre.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/hospitaladmissions-200x121.png 200w, https:\/\/www.solihulldentalcentre.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/hospitaladmissions-768x465.png 768w, https:\/\/www.solihulldentalcentre.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/hospitaladmissions-500x303.png 500w, https:\/\/www.solihulldentalcentre.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/hospitaladmissions-624x378.png 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 846px) 100vw, 846px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dental caries is caused when the bacteria in your mouth feed on sugar, as they do this they excrete acid which attacks The outer surface of your tooth. This attack continues until the dental care is reaches deep inside your tooth. If the attack isn&#8217;t halted by a change in oral healthcare routine, diet and dental treatments then ultimately the tooth will become extremely painful, sensitive and could be lost!<\/p>\n<p>This seems to be what is happening to these young people which causes these hospital admissions. Becoming more educated about cleaning one&#8217;s teeth and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solihulldentalcentre.co.uk\/blog\/10-ways-to-give-up-sugar-solihullsugarchallenge\/\">diet<\/a> is the route to reducing this hospitalisation.<\/p>\n<h2>Type 2 Diabetes<\/h2>\n<p>Chris Askew,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.diabetes.org.uk\/About_us\/News\/New-smart-sugar-app\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Diabetes UK<\/a> Chief Executive, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cDiets that are high in sugar are fuelling the rise in obesity, and in turn the dramatic rise in Type 2 diabetes, a serious health condition that can lead to devastating complications such as blindness, amputations and stroke. This is unlike Type 1 diabetes which cannot be prevented and is not caused by being obese. With the average child consuming three times the recommended daily amount of sugar, the need for action has never been more urgent. The new Sugar Smart app will help parents to understand and take control of their children\u2019s sugar intake.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>PHE states that young people\u00a0are eating 3X more sugar than is recommended in their\u00a0new Change4Life marketing campaign.
